Proper treatment IS KEY

A word from the FADOQ ChairGisèle Tassé-Goodman

As fall 2019 draws to a close and the holiday season approaches, I would like to talk to you about the best gift we can give to others and our society: proper treatment.

But first let me share with you some of the things I’ve been doing in my new role as Chair of Réseau FADOQ. Over the fall I was heavily involved in advocating for quality of life for seniors on your behalf at meetings with political bodies, in addition to the multiple meetings and events that normally go along with chairing a large organization.

“Let’s sow the seeds of happiness in our communities.”

In preparation for the federal election on October 21, we successfully organized a debate on October 1 and met individually with representatives of the various political parties to get them on board with our Making Seniors Our Priority platform.

We also took part in two parliamentary commissions: one on the Public Curator and the other on the expansion of pharmacists’ powers. We also held a meeting with the Minister Responsible for Seniors and Informal Caregivers, Marguerite Blais, to submit our recommendations with regard to the provincial policy on caregivers that’s scheduled for 2020.

These interactions were directly related to proper treatment. Each time Réseau FADOQ puts pressure on the government to make quality of life for seniors a priority issue, we take another step forward on the path to ensuring proper treatment.

Elder abuse is an issue that affects me deeply. It exists everywhere: in our families, institutions, and communities. Réseau FADOQ condemns and fights against such abuse, which undermines the dignity of the most vulnerable members of society.

At the individual level, abuse can be prevented by providing proper treatment. The holiday season is the perfect time to adopt attitudes and practices that foster a loved one’s well-being.

Take the time to visit your father, mother, or an elderly relative. You could drive a loved one to the hairdresser, take them out for coffee, or listen to stories from their childhood or adult life.

These simple little gestures cost practically nothing—I call them the seeds of happiness. As the holiday season approaches, remember that loneliness is particularly difficult during this time of year. Sow the seeds of happiness all around you.

Happy holidays to each of you!
