Maestro hearing health program: Free hearing assessment
With the 30th edition of the Jeux FADOQ coming up, we thought it would be a good idea to look in our archives and present a brief history of one of the event’s most emblematic disciplines: sandbag baseball.
Sandbag baseball was one of the seven disciplines on the program at the first Games, then known as the Jeux des Aînés.
The other inaugural disciplines were Golf, Duckpin, Ten-Pin bowling , Sandbagging, Darts and Pétanque.
The rules of the game are an amalgam of sandbags and baseball. A game pits two teams of nine players, including a captain, against each other for seven innings. An inning consists of one at-bat for each team. At the provincial finals, the scoring limit per inning per team is set at ten runs. Runs are scored using pitches that allow players to advance from the bases to home plate.
A total of 190 participants from across the province are registered for the 2023 edition of the Jeux FADOQ, to be held in Sherbrooke from September 19 to 21.
Finally, sandbag baseball will make its debut as a demonstration discipline at the next Canadian Games, to be held in Quebec City in August 2024. Sandbag baseball remains a little-known discipline in the rest of Canada.Find out more about the 30th edition
