SEASON 2023-2024
PROGRAMMING
PROVIDENCIA
By LA PARCERA
September 19 – 30, 2023
Following the death of her great-aunt, Adriana, a career-driven woman on the brink of burnout, finds herself obligated to accompany her father to a funeral in Boston. She is thrust into a family reunion where she is confronted with the intensity of her Colombian family and the strong women who lead it. Surprise! The event, taking place just two days before the deceased’s 80th birthday, will have a strangely festive atmosphere… Laughter, music, unexpected twists, and way too much food will be on the menu in this comedy where the death of a matriarch reunites a family scattered across the continent.
THE FABULATING SPECIES
By PIRATA THÉÂTRE
October 17 – 28, 2023
Observations of the collapse of the world as we know it are multiplying. The consequences of the ecological crisis are piling up. Faced with this situation, should we find the ability to adapt radically? People who have experienced personal collapse share what they have learned. Inspired by Nancy Houston’s essay of the same name, they give meaning to their experience by recording ecological collapse and artistic composition.
Will it be possible to grow a garden on stage? Without soil or sunlight, the result is unpredictable. The task may end in failure or victory. The Fabulating Species practices sprouting beginnings, thoughts, and flowers. In what state will life be left?
THE INTOXICATION OF DEPTHS
By COMPANY 1001
November 15 – 16, 2023
To avoid the intoxication of depths, one must talk to someone or repeat the same actions and be with others. When you are alone, time shrinks, stretches, and perception blurs… Through intertwined stories in the style of One Thousand and One Nights, this show poetically addresses issues in the Middle East, the role of women, and their ways of protesting. Speaking is what Pârya, the oil can deliverer, Pâri, the mermaid torn from the sea, and Shéhérazade do, addressing her child.
Here, stories interconnect and become intimately linked. These voices from the depths of a land of wandering speak of displacement, where one comes from, and the choice of where one lives. This choice that is not really a choice.
LAST FRONTIER
By THÉÂTRE EVEREST
November 30 – December 9, 2023
Northern lights, “larger-than-life” mountains, and rivers with golden tributaries, the Yukon is a mythical place that embodies the great northern dream; but what about the reality of the local populations? With humor, sensitivity, and derision, Last Frontier stands halfway between autofiction, documentary theater, and cabaret. Through a series of multidisciplinary scenes that combine shadow theater, drag, video projection, and live music, francophone creators from Quebec and the Yukon deliver testimonies and stories that attempt to demystify our romantic relationship with the North. A show that celebrates our contradictions and the complex space between dream and reality.
THE REBELLION OF THE MINUSCULE
By THÉÂTRE DU RENARD
January 18 – 27, 2024
At the crossroads of the museum and the laboratory, this show invites the audience on a journey into the infinitely small, filled with humor and visual poetry. Quantum physics is complex, paradoxical, sometimes frustrating in its incomprehensibility. Yet, it is also the core, often strange or disturbing but essential, of our world. The rebellion of the minuscule is a journey inside the atoms that make up everything around us. A puppet theater show where works of art are constructed live. Where the low-tech magic of images amplifies the vertigo between knowledge and the unknown, certainty and emptiness, light and matter.
MAELSTRÖM
By THÉÂTRE I.N.K.
February 13 – March 1, 2024
Marylin-euh is invited to join a group that belongs to a very particular world that is very difficult to integrate into. This community lives in an amusement park where intense activities serve as outlets. At first, Marylin-euh refuses to participate, resists, and questions the park’s rules, which follow no logic. Through comical scenes, a disturbing universe slowly emerges. This is conveyed in the show, particularly through dreamlike scenes representing significant living elements (bacteria, prehistoric fish, dinosaurs, and primates) in the evolution of our universe. Marylin-euh’s participation in the community’s activities will challenge David-Emmanuel, Marilyn, and Maxime-Olivier, who must each find their own way to make sense of it all. The play highlights our ability to have genuine fun and endure in this period of our evolution where humans are constantly asking a thousand questions while appearing perfectly happy all the time.
MY TALE OF FIRE, Biking Between Falling Bombs
By THÉÂTRE DE LA PIRE ESPÈCE
March 14 – 26, 2024
It’s a very old story… In those days, the sky was always blue, Felix often ate cake, and all his neighbors were his friends. And then one day, everything changed! The tired sun often remained hidden, and the night covered everything. People were going crazy, forgetting their mothers’ names, and the sounds of animals at night sent shivers down the spine. This new creation tells the story of Felix, a young boy who embarks on an improbable bike journey with his father in a country on the brink of collapse. Through trials, the visions he encounters transform within him, in a magical way.
THE AUTOCHTONERIES OF AUX ÉCURIES
By LES PRODUCTIONS MENUENTAKUAN
April 11 – 21, 2024
“Don’t worry, the theater takeover is only for two weeks… and the flag planted in front is not a flag, it’s just our laundry drying. Be at ease, the Autochtoneries of Aux Écuries were born from the desire of our artistic direction collective to promote and make known approaches that resonate with us. Young and old will come together around works that reflect our collective work over the past years, from indigenous and non-indigenous artists and producers. Yes, it is true that telling our true stories sometimes requires revisiting a forgotten part of our collective history, but… Kassinu nuitsheuakantsh, dear friends, do not lose hope, because this festival is a place of encounters, and the theater will be returned to you. Finally, we hope.” – Charles Bender, Marco Collin, and Xavier Huard, artistic directors, Les Productions Menuentakuan
