Old Age Security for those aged 65–74: Ottawa needs to act now
FADOQ is once again calling on Ottawa to adopt the bill currently on the table to finally put an end to age‑based discrimination affecting people who receive Old Age Security benefits.
The 10% increase to Old Age Security in 2022, granted exclusively to people aged 75 and over, created two classes of seniors.
Since then, FADOQ has been demanding that people aged 65 to 74 also receive this 10% increase. In Quebec, approximately 100,000 people would be affected by the adjustment of this benefit.
An absurd situation
“The situation is absurd. Many people aged 65 to 74 also need this increase, especially with prices rising everywhere. Just think of groceries or the pharmacy. And I’m not even mentioning housing or homes. Many seniors simply cannot make ends meet at the end of the month,” says Yves Bouchard, President of FADOQ.
FADOQ welcomes the introduction of Bill C‑121 by the Bloc Québécois and will begin taking steps with all political parties to amplify the voices of seniors and promote the adoption of this essential reform, in a context marked by growing financial insecurity and the rising cost of living.
