Budget: FADOQ can contribute to the national health prevention strategy
FADOQ welcomes the Québec government’s decision to allocate an additional $100 million over five years to the national health prevention strategy in its 2026–2027 budget.
As an organization that gets more than 70,000 people moving every week, FADOQ is a key player in promoting active aging.
With financial support through this strategy, FADOQ would be able to reach 100,000 active participants per week.
“Thanks to our 690 local clubs and 16 regional groups, we enable seniors to come together, stay active, and socialize. We want to do even more to help achieve the government’s goals of reducing chronic diseases and maintaining autonomy,” says Yves Bouchard, President of FADOQ.
An insufficient budget for home support services
The budget allocated to home support services did not see a significant increase in the 2026–2027 budget. The total allocation stands at just over $2.86 billion. In our pre‑budget brief, we recommended doubling this amount.
“If we truly want to succeed in shifting toward home-based care and services, and ensure that the national home support policy works, a much larger share of the health budget must be dedicated to this component. With the accelerated aging of the population, time is running out,” reminds Mr. Bouchard.
A survey conducted among our members revealed that home care is among the most difficult services to access.
The budget does provide an additional $2.16 billion over five years to improve access to health and social services, including a $811.5 million allocation to “strengthen the delivery of care and services in public health and social services institutions.” FADOQ recommends that a significant portion of this funding be directed toward home care and services.
Physical activity and sports are left behind
FADOQ regrets the lack of significant new investments in the areas of physical activity, sports, and outdoor recreation.
As a member of the Coalition for the Future of Sport and Physical Activity in Québec (CASAPQ), FADOQ wishes to reiterate that physical activity, sports, and outdoor recreation must be recognized for their substantial contribution to health, collective well‑being, and community vitality.
Noteworthy measures
FADOQ would like to highlight several measures that will improve seniors’ quality of life and support their autonomy:
- $136 million over four years to complete funding for the 2026–2031 Government Action Plan for Family Caregivers, which is expected to be released this spring;
- $5.9 million starting this year to continue the RénoRégion program, which provides financial assistance to low‑ or modest‑income owner‑occupants living in rural areas for major repairs to their homes;
- $30 million over two years to ensure the continuation of the Home Adaptation Program.
