FADOQ welcomes the commitment to making health prevention a societal priority

FADOQ applauds the government’s shift toward prevention in order to reduce pressure on the healthcare system through its health prevention strategy, particularly with its focus on physical activity.

With its 16 regional offices and 690 local clubs, FADOQ is the leading organization dedicated to keeping older adults active and socially engaged across the province.

“FADOQ offers to thousands of people in Quebec opportunities to engage in physical activity, participate in recreational activities, and come together. We are therefore ready to be a partner in this health prevention strategy so that even more older adults can age in good health,” said FADOQ President Yves Bouchard.

The implementation plan for this health prevention strategy must be accompanied by adequate and ambitious funding in order to achieve its objectives.

Among the measures announced in the strategy, the government intends to launch pilot projects to identify people at risk of developing chronic diseases. FADOQ supports this initiative but stresses the importance of providing ongoing support to these individuals so they can adopt healthy lifestyle habits and thus prevent their health conditions from worsening.

FADOQ believes that Quebec should strive to become a global leader in health, prevention, and the promotion of healthy lifestyle habits for all age groups. Active aging is one of the keys to reducing the onset of chronic diseases.

Through its physical and sports activities, group classes, and the Viactive program, FADOQ helps improve the quality of life of people aged 50 and over, ensuring their physical and mental well-being. Each week, the organization keeps more than 70,000 people moving across Quebec.

Ending isolation

One of the causes of sedentary lifestyles among older adults is social isolation. Some live with hearing, vision, or mobility impairments and cannot afford the devices needed to address these issues.

To reduce premature mortality linked to socioeconomic inequalities, FADOQ believes it is essential to cover or reimburse the costs of essential medical devices for low-income seniors, such as hearing aids, glasses, and mobility aids. This would reduce inequalities in access and strengthen independence.
