Petition to Increase Pension Benefits and Health Transfers

Réseau FADOQ invites the public to sign an important petition on the House of Commons website asking the federal government to increase Old Age Security (OAS) benefits and the Canada Health Transfer (CHT), and speed up Internet connections.

Sign the petition

In recent years, Réseau FADOQ has repeatedly urged Ottawa to increase Old Age Security benefits by at least 10%. This demand was part of FADOQ’s election platform in the fall of 2019, when the Prime Minister of Canada committed to increasing OAS benefits by 10% for seniors aged 75 and over.

This promise, which Justin Trudeau reiterated in last September’s Speech from the Throne, has been slow to materialize. Réseau FADOQ maintains that the enhancement of this benefit should concern, not only people aged 75 and over, but also, those aged between 65 and 74.

“It is unacceptable that the federal government is not doing more to financially help seniors, many of whom are in a worrisome financial situation that has been aggravated by the pandemic,” deplores the president of the Réseau FADOQ, Gisèle Tassé-Goodman.

Increase in health transfers

In subsequent briefs submitted since 2019 to the Office of the Minister of Finance of Canada as part of the pre-budget consultations, Réseau FADOQ requests that the Canada Health Transfer (CHT) be indexed by 6% annually and that a variable be included in the calculation formula to take into account the aging population of the provinces and territories.

The biggest seniors organization in the country unequivocally reiterates that Ottawa must help the provinces absorb the constantly rising costs of our health system. We need more generous federal transfers to broaden access to care. This demand is even more important in the context of the current health crisis.

Those interested in signing this petition have until March 20, 2021 to do so.
