Réseau FADOQ and the some 35 provincial member organizations of Collectif pour une stratégie nationale en prévention du suicide (the collective for a provincial suicide prevention strategy), which was launched in September, are applauding the government’s willingness to implement a suicide prevention strategy. We have been waiting for this announcement for over 15 years, and it has finally come from Minister of Health and Social Services Danielle McCann at the forum on adult mental health.
The collective finds the government’s swift response to its main recommendations encouraging. The member organizations want to see a government strategy that involves all relevant departments, sufficient investments, and collaborative efforts. Ensuring accessible, seamless, high-quality services, means focusing on prevention, intervention, postvention, and promoting mental health all at once. The collective is looking forward to learning more about the process that will lead to the adoption of the strategy.
The collective’s goal is to convince the government to develop a suicide prevention strategy. It quickly gained support for the idea of prioritizing suicide prevention from a range of actors in Quebec society. It has also helped raise awareness about Quebec’s expertise in the field and the need for stronger leadership. Quebecers were invited to support the Pour un Québec plus lumineux awareness campaign.
