Membres FADOQ : allez-y, trahissez votre âge!

20. Nancy Dion – 54

Bodybuilding for Fun!

Following a cancer diagnosis in 2015, Nancy Dion went through a period of depression. The former servicewoman, who had gained a lot of weight due to her cancer-related medication, could not find the motivation to be more active.

A photo of her taken on vacation acted as a trigger. Upon her return, Nancy Dion immediately sought the help of a coach. She quickly lost about 10 pounds, which encouraged her to continue. She trained hard, and with great discipline, to the point where she stepped onto a stage in a bikini for the first time to take part in a bodybuilding competition. At the age of 50! In 2020, she represented Canada in Miami at the Fitness Universe Weekend, winning in her category.

“The stage has become my passion. I don’t want to be Miss Universe, I’m just doing it for fun. That’s it.”

According to Nancy Dion, the image of the aging woman has changed dramatically over the past 30 years and she is happy to contribute in her own way to this form of empowerment.

“After having her kids, my mother said her life was over. She was barely 40, but that’s how people thought of aging back then. For me, getting old means freedom.”

Now 54 years old, Nancy Dion says she no longer feels the need to impress the gallery as she did when she was younger. She is at ease with herself, assuming all the choices she makes. However, she notes that metabolism slows as we age and that it is important to develop good habits.

“Cancer has taught me to appreciate being alive,” she says. “And age has taught me to know myself better. We shouldn’t let ourselves become frustrated over details. The important thing is to look forward and grab the opportunities when they come.”

Nancy Dion is often told that she doesn’t look her age. But at no time did she try to hide her age or wish she were younger. She is 54 years old and proud of it.

“I love saying my age and seeing the amazement in people’s faces!”
