International Day of Older Persons: Aging is Not a Barrier
Here is an open letter from the president of Réseau FADOQ, Gisèle Tassé-Goodman. ...
Quebec athletes returned from the Canada 55+ Games in Quebec City, which were organized by Réseau FADOQ, with an impressive total of medals in the running events.
In both the 10 km and 5 km races, Quebecois delivered inspiring performances on the beautiful course that started and finished at the Parc de la Pointe-aux-Lièvres.
In the men’s 55 to 64 age group, Carl Saint-Jacques narrowly beat Marc-André Latour in the 10 km race. Both participants crossed the finish line with a time of 42 minutes and 16 seconds, and a photo finish was required to separate them.
Among the women, Andrée Fournier won the 10 km event for those aged 65 and older with a time of 53 minutes and 43 seconds, while Lynne Ménard took gold in the 55 to 64 age group with a time of 52 minutes and 5 seconds. Sylvie Duquette claimed the top spot in the 5 km with a time of 26 minutes and 24 seconds.
In the 5 km race, Carl Saint-Jacques won gold again in the 55 to 64 age group with an impressive time of 19 minutes and 28 seconds.
The running athletes also had the opportunity to run alongside our ambassador and four-time Olympian Pierre Harvey in the 5 km event. Before the race, the federal Minister of Labour and Seniors, the Honourable Steven MacKinnon, addressed the runners to wish them good luck.
Pierre-Luc Lachance and Claude Lavoie, members of the Quebec City executive committee, who also participated in the 5 km race unofficially, presented medals to the winners.
All results from the running events can be found on the Canada 55+ Games website.
Throughout the two running events, the sportsmanship that characterizes this event was evident as all participants encouraged each other.
Some of our runners are now preparing for the FADOQ Provincial Games, which will take place from September 17 to 19 in Sherbrooke.
