Réseau FADOQ welcomes the targeted assistance to small private seniors’ residences (known by the French acronym RPA), both in terms of staffing and the sprinkler program, announced on December 14 by the Quebec government.
We wanted to see more substantial financial support for RPAs as they face many challenges.
We welcome the increased financial assistance for sprinkler installation as this is a significant investment for RPAs, particularly those that are not connected to a municipal water system.
The extension of the Québec government program providing full coverage of wage premiums for orderlies, nurses and nursing assistants will give them a tool to reduce labour shortages.
Let’s remember that small private senior residences are human scale living environments that deserve to be better supported. In the event of a closure, affected residents are frequently uprooted from their area and forced to move to higher rent accommodations.
Moving is particularly difficult for seniors, especially if they have to move away from their family, loved ones and community.
