Taking up a sport as difficult as figure skating at the age of 73 is quite an achievement. But doing so after having a hip replaced in 2010 is nothing short of amazing.
Diane Côté-Frégeau fell in love with figure skating as a teenager. After abandoning the sport as an adult, she happened upon a figure skating film about ten years ago.
“My love of skating immediately resurfaced,” she says. “In 2012, I asked my husband for skates. Stunned, he asked me if I was serious.”
Her return to the sport was gradual. Bit by bit, her confidence returned. Today, with the guidance of two good coaches, she practises up to five times a week at the Blainville/Sainte-Thérèse skating club. She will be taking part in an international competition in Ottawa from September 21 to 24 in the 68+ age group.
Last year, she filmed herself performing for an online figure skating competition in Bucharest, sent the video to the judges, and they awarded her a gold medal!
“Sometimes people in their 40s say to me, ‘I’d like to do this or that sport, but I’m too old,'” she laughs. My best advice is to go ahead and do it if you really want to. Of course, your health must not be an obstacle. But age should not get in your way. Exercise is a perfect way to get away from things.”
